It feels like forever ago since I saw Franz Ferdinand play a surprise show at Glasslands during their album listening party. Now their somewhat underappreciated new album Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action has been out since late August, giving these songs more time to become seasoned in my head.
Boy, did the songs sound glorious. The first half of Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action is just perfectly executed guitar rock bliss. There’s not a shortcoming in sight. Quite simply, these songs just shine live. “Bullet” kicked off the show like a bullet train sprinting towards its destination, which merged right into the now classic “The Dark Of The Matinée.” The other new tracks, such as “Evil Eye”, “Stand On The Horizon”, “Love Illumination”, and “Right Action” are just so tight live, its impossible not to break out some moves while they’re playing.
Over the course of 4 albums, Franz Ferdinand have consistently been able to create sharp songs that will make you dance. You can’t argue with performances of “Outsiders”, “Ulysses”, “Michael”, “The Fallen”, “This Fire”, and of course, “Take Me Out.” The latter which still stands as one of the great modern rock songs of our time. Watching how people react to the song, to this day, leaves me in awe.
Franz Ferdinand have an electric energy live that is genuine. Looking at them play, you can tell they’re having just as much fun as we are watching. This passes along good vibes, which truly do make all of the difference. As a fan of the band, I was amazingly impressed with the setlist, and how great they sounded last night. They’ve still got plenty left to offer us.
