It’s been a while since we’ve had a Jack Ryan movie, and now seems like an apropos time, what with the recent passing of Tom Clancy. The last film, to refresh your memory, was The Sum of All Fears, released in 2002 with Phil Alden Robinson directing and Ben Affleck leading as Jack Ryan. It was an attempt to reboot the Alec Baldwin/Harrison Ford films from some ten years prior, but no sequels got off the ground. Now comes this original prequel-reboot with Kenneth Branagh helming and starring as the red-headed Russian villain opposite Chris Pine’s Jack Ryan.
The premiere trailer has a good helping of action (some reminiscent of Martin Campbell’s 2006 Casino Royale, namely the bathroom fight sequence), and it also takes Jack Ryan back to his early analyst days. Despite the post-Cold War setting, the film does seem to be leaning towards a US versus Russia-driven plot, but I’m willing to reserve my judgment of both the full plot and the overall action until I actually see the film. How do you think it’ll fare?
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, based on Tom Clancy’s eponymous spy, follows Jack Ryan (Chris Pine) as he gets out of the CIA’s Financial Intelligence Unit and out into the field after discovering a potential financial terrorist plot. William Harper (Kevin Costner) serves as his handler, Cathy Ryan (Kiera Knightly) is Ryan’s fiancée, and Kenneth Branagh pulls double duty as Viktor Cherevin, the villain, and the director. The film is set for a Christmas Day 2013 release.
