“Just so you know, this isn’t personal”
Well, with the recent name change to Monday Morning Matinee, we weren’t able to publish our recap in time, so here’s a little last minute recap before you head into the finale tonight, which is just an hour or so away.
Saul gets picked up by the vacuum guy, who turns out to be named Ed, and played by the great Robert Forster. Saul sees that he will have company in a little bunk while he waits to be moved, and his roommate will be none other than Mr. White, who isn’t doing too well down there.
We see some of the ABQ DEA agents with Marie headed to her house only to see that the Nazi’s already got to it, raiding it in its entirety for the confessions tapes and any evidence that Hank may have got out of Jesse. We then see the Nazi’s watchng Jesse’s confession. Jack goes to kill Jesse after finding out that he ratted out Todd about the killing of Drew Sharp, but ironically Todd saves him again. They bring up Todd’s crush on Lydia, he doesn’t like that too much. Meanwhile Jesse begins to try and pick his lock.
We see Walt and Saul have one last talk. Walt wants Saul to find him hit-men mercenaries to take down Jack. Saul says maybe Walt should stick around in order to take the heat off Skylar and take the blame. If not, they will take her house, her money, and life will be tough for them as there will be no way for them to make means or get any money from Walt. Maybe Walt should go to the slammer since his time is limited anyway. Saul says he’s out and Walt tries to intimidate him as he did earlier in the season, only this time he breaks down into a coughing fit. Saul leaves him in his coughing range telling him “It’s over.”
Meanwhile Skylar is being intensely questioned by lawyers and officers, zoning out similarly to how Walt zoned out in the pilot when he was informed of his cancer. She comes home only to find that Todd and Jack’s men in Holly’s room scaring Skylar, making her promise that she didn’t speak about them to the cops. Todd comes to make sure she won’t say anything about Lydia to the cops, and my gut tells me that this could prove costly for both Todd and Lydia in tonight’s finale.
Then we see Lydia have one of her awkward public tea/lunch dates with Todd, providing her nervous act to Todd who even dresses up nice for the occasion. Lydia doesn’t plan on continuing with the risk of meth production with Skylar talking and is all for haulting production for the time being until Todd informs her that the meth is now 92% pure and blue. Lydia is made aware that they’re making it through using Jesse as a hostage, but the temptation of such high quality meth is too much for her to deny.
Ed takes Walt to New Hampshire and sets him up in a very isolated quiet spot that sort of looks like the place I imagined Bon Iver recorded his first album. No phones, no internet, nothing but the basic necessities, and 2 copies of Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium on DVD. Ironically Robert Forster (Ed) says he’s not much of a movie guy.
We see Jesse make his escape from his pit, after Todd comes by to drop off some ice cream. He struggles but manages to break free (while throwing in a “come on, bitch” for good measure). He gets to the fence but the neo-nazis are right behind him. He never had a chance. To make their point Todd goes to Andreas house and brutally makes his point by shooting her in the head without any hesitation. Todd tells Andrea “just so you know this isn’t personal” right before shooting her leaving her dead on her front porch. Poor Jesse, what else does the guy have to go through before the show is over?
Ed comes back a month later to visit Walt, and to provide him with some new glasses, clothes, and some information updates. We learn Skylar still awaits trial, and she is currently doing taxi dispatch work. Ed helps him with his chemotherapy, and we can tell Walt is getting weaker. Ed is quick to leave and Walt is so lonely that he sadly asks Ed in a heartbreaking way to stay with him for a little longer. Walt offers Ed $10,000 just to stay with him for an hour.
Walt figures out a way to get his family some money through the box of the ensure protein drinks. He is able to sneak a call to his son, but the plan doesn’t work as Walt Jr. wants nothing to do with him. He freaks out on his dad, reminding him that he killed Uncle Hank. “Why don’t you just die already?” Walter Jr. asks again, just as he said earlier in the show, only this time he means it.
Walt defeated and almost broken phones the ABQ DEA agency and is ready to give himself up, until he sees Gretchen & Elliot live on Chrlie Rose, being interviewed about Walt. They discredit everything Walt did for the company, wiping down all his work to the company name. This leaves Walt’s pride truly hurt, possibly for the final time after the crushing conversation for Walter Jr. This leads him to leave the bar, determined, pissed off, with pure vengeance in his eye.
The cops arrive and Walt is there, only his unfinished drink remains.
