Over the weekend Philomena fared quite well during its premiere at the Venice Film Festival. It’s been slated for a release on Christmas day, confirming its potential as Oscar bait.
It stars Steve Coogan as a political journalist who finds himself unemployed. During his time, he picks up the story of a woman played by Judi Dench who begins a search for her long lost son who she had to give up for adoption after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. He joins her on her quest that takes them on a journey that will change both of their lives.
Philomena was directed by Stephen Frear and co-written by Jeff Pope & Steve Coogan. It looks like a film that hits both the comedic and dramatic notes. We all know Dench will be great, a nomination is always within reason for her. But it looks like one of the more serious roles for Coogan, and that’s something I’m really excited about. It should be interesting to see them pair up.
Philomena looks like it has potential to be both a crowd-pleaser and a dramatic weapon. We’ll see how it fairs come Christmas day. Find the trailer below.
Indiewire also premeired a short clip of the film which gives us a bit of a clue of its feel, other than the trailer. I’m digging it quite a bit. Find it below.
