Palo Alto is a film based on James Franco’s own short story collection known as the Palo Alto stories. The film was directed and written by Gia Coppola (her directorial debut), the granddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola and the niece of Sofia and Roman.
In it, we get to follow a few different story lines around the suburban area of Palo Alto which are all interconnected. Emma Roberts stars as a high school girl who strikes up an affair with her soccer coach, played by James Franco. It also stars Val Kilmer, Jack Kilmer, Zoe Levin, Chris Messina, Talia Shire, Nat Wolff, Claudia Levy, Keegan Alen, and Don Novello.
The trailer definitely gives off a similar feel to one found in Sofia’s films (as well as Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers). Especially with the music, which is by Blood Orange, a.k.a Devonté Hynes along with Rooney’s Robert Schwartzman, who worked together to create the score for the film.
The film made its premiere at the Tellurude Film Festival over Labor Day weekend. No official release date yet, but I’m sure we will be hearing about one soon enough. For now, enjoy the colorful trailer below.
