I loved Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief when I first read it my sophomore year of college, and I still love it today. It holds a special place on my bookshelves, albeit towards the end of the alphabetical ordered shelves. When I learned of the planned adaptation, I was hesitant. Who wouldn’t be if they heard that one of their treasured novels was getting the big screen treatment? My hesitation yielded bit by bit as news broke that Brian Percival (director of six Downton Abbey episodes) would directed, Geoffrey Rush would lead the cast as Hans Hubermann, and, most recently, John Williams would score the film. With the reveal of this first trailer, my hesitation is somewhat alleviated, but the inspirational trailer voice-over doesn’t sit well with me, as the trailer (below) can easily speak for itself.
The Book Thief follows Liesel Meminger (Sophie Nélisse), a young girl fostered by Hans and Rosa Hubermann (Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson) in Nazi Germany. The novel is written by Markus Zusak, and the film is directed by Brian Percival with a script from Michael Petroni. It is set to be released on November 15th, 2013.
