Short Term 12 emerged as one of the clear winners of SXSW this year, and one glimpse of the trailer will explain why. It not only won the Narrative Feature Grand Jury Award but the Audience Award, which really speaks highly towards its praise.
It takes a It’s written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton who based it on his 2009 short film of the same name. It tells the tale of a Grace (Brie Larson) who is responsible for a group of kids in a foster home, some of which are troubled with mental illnesses. She works there with her boyfriend Mason (John Gallagher Jr.) and a new worker (Rami Malek) and tries to keep them as happy as can be.
When Grace is the one who is responsible for all these kids, finds that she may be just as troubled as them, she has a hard time keeping it together. It probably doesn’t help that she works with her boyfriend. The trailer makes this look like a powerful opportunity that could provide one hell of a emotional ride. Brie Larson has been quietly effective in everything that she’s appeared in, including Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, 21 Jump Street, Greenberg, and a wonderful recent episode of Community (‘Herstory of Dance’), and it looks like she truly delivers here.
Can’t wait to see it when it comes out on August 23. Love the use of Youth Lagoon’s “Montana” in the trailer, which you can watch below.
