Everyone’s argument against Michael Cera is that he plays the same guy over and over. That is a fair argument, but one that will be harder with the release of his new movie Crystal Fairy (or Crystal Fairy & The Magical Cactus).
Cera plays against type as Jamie, an American on vacation in Chile who is seeking a special San Pedro cactus that has hallucinogenic properties that will allow for some hard tripping. Along the way he encounters a girl named Crystal Fairy (Gaby Hoffman) who will add things to their adventure that they never would have expected.
Crystal Fairy showed at Sundance and did pretty well. People praised Cera’s work in it, but really went nuts for the performance from Gaby Hoffman, who is supposed to steal the show entirely. The first trailer makes this film look like a fun yet very interesting ride.
Sebastián Silva directed the film, which comes out on July 12. Check out its trailer below.
