The_Spectacular_Now_4

After hearing about the tremendous amount of praise that The Spectacular Now received while at Sundance, it immediately jumped to the front of my must see list for 2013.

The film is based upon the book of the same title written by Tim Tharp. It tells the story of what happens when a hard partying teen named Sutter Keely, who is a borderline alcoholic, meets Aimee Finicky, the “nice girl” who reads science fiction. Basically, the polar opposite of Sutter. The two find a unique bond and slowly fall in love.

The film was written by Michael H. Weber and Scott Neustadter, the same guys who wrote the absolutely wonderful (500) Days Of Summer. It was directed by James Ponsoldt, the guy who directed last years overlooked film Smashed, which also dealt with conflicts with alcoholism.

The book is supposed to be great, and based on the early buzz and wonderful first trailer, the film should be no different. Sporting a great cast featuring Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley (The Descendants), Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Brie Larson, Kyle Chandler, Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad). Although Miles Teller’s roles haven’t been all that spectacular so far (21 And Over, Project X), he received acclaim for his work in Rabbit Hole, and the word from Sundance is that he and Woodley are great together in this.

I do get a (500) Days Of Summer feel from this, and think it could be one of the more special films that come out this year. It comes out on August 2. Can’t wait to check this one out as soon as it comes out.
