It’s been a few years since I last caught Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin. It was also at my college, so things were a little bit different at the Mercury Lounge this past Saturday night. It’s sad for me to report that John Robert Cardwell is no longer with the band. This was something that was sad to notice, but the band did just fine without him. Philip Dickey took over all vocals as he rotated from drums to guitar and handled things with style and with lots of humor.
The band just recently announced their new album Fly By Wire, and played us a few songs off that (new single “Nightwater Girlfriend” and “Lucky Young). But mostly this was a glorious call to arms with all of the bands best moments (“Glue Girls”, “Oregon Girl”, “Think I Wanna Die”, “Modern Mystery”, “Sink/Let It Sway”) sounding as good as ever. Over the years I’ve really grown to appreciate how consistently good these guys are, and this show made me realize that these guys may just be one of the most underappreciated bands we have going right now. They should be miles and miles bigger than they are. But if I’m able to catch them comfortably at venues like Mercury Lounge, I guess I shouldn’t be complaining at all.
They will be back to the city this October, so please be on the lookout for those dates. Hope to see you then.
