Houndmouth are a band that have done all the right things to get to where they are. They have taken their time to get there, taking the right steps and making the most of every opportunity, making any of us who lucky enough to watch their rise feel pretty special. The band have improved literally every time that I’ve seen them, and I’m sure that they won’t stop here.
Their performance at Rockwood Music Hall on Thursday was my 3rd time catching them in NYC, and it was the fullest and most diverse set yet. They got to show off more new songs from their debut album From The Hills Below The City, as well as the now familiar songs off their EP. All 4 of them are versatile singers that equally can hold their own, with bassist Zak Appleby getting a much larger chance to shine than he did in their previous performances.
They nailed each and every song with incredibly well delivered tight performances that were as sincere as they come. They mixed things up and had some fun, switching instruments and delivering a few covers. It was a side of the band I hadn’t seen before, but once again showed their skill as musicians.
From The Hills Below The City comes out June 4 via Rough Trade. This is one of the albums that you really shouldn’t be without this year.
