Big Boi dropped by the always great Studio at Webster Hall to give a rare intimate look at his live show. I saw him from afar at Bonnaroo 2011, so seeing him in the fantastic venue was a nice change.
Big Boi comes armed with a live guitarist, drummer, and DJ who created a rock atmosphere that spiced up all of his songs nicely. He wasn’t shy of promoting his new album Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors, as that was the purpose of the show. In total, the show was a breezy 45-50 minutes, so Big Boi had to pump everything out quick.
Surprisingly he gave us more Outkast classics than new material, which was a pleasant surprise. He gave electric versions of his Outkast classics “Ms. Jackson”, “Ghetto Musick”, “B.O.B.”, “ATLiens” which had the crowed energized and nostalgic. All the new songs he played (“Mama Told Me”, “CPU”, “Apple Of My Eye”) sounded great live.
It was a rare opportunity to see an artist like Big Boi in a great intimate space, and I was happy to attend.
