A lot can happen in a year’s time. Just ask Houndmouth. The band went from putting out some great demos last winter, and are now signed to Rough Trade, releasing a fantastic little debut EP to put them on the map. They made their NYC debut last night at Bowery Ballroom, opening for Dry The River.
I expected them to be solid live, but I had no idea how much they bring it. One minute they’re soothing your soul with hearty folk jams, and the next minute they’re bringing a country-tingled rock bounce, which will have Alabama Shakes begging them to tour with, in no time.
The band is ultra talented from every see-able angle, with two ultra talented singers in Matt Myers & Katie Toupin, who provided a whole well of varied soundings songs. Zak Appleby & Shane Cody provide a tight rhythm section that relentlessly kept things moving and grooving at all times.
The band played a solid set of tunes that could surely create one hell of a debut album when that time comes (maybe next year?). For now, enjoy the band at this early juncture, because I guarantee these guys are only going to get bigger.
Look out for them at CMJ. You don’t want to miss them. I promise.
