Grimes performed to a packed crowd for a free show at Pier 84. Both Diiv and Wild Nothing opened. With many free shows, the crowd can obviously be hit-or-miss, and in this case it was a mixed batch. Claire Boucher started off solo but was soon joined by a pair of dancers. Grimes actually worked the live outdoor setting well, as the location right next to the Inrepid and Hudson River provided a perfect atmosphere, fitting for her style of late night jams.
Her sound and voice manipulation is fun to watch live, and she creates a pretty enjoyable show considering it’s just her up there. The crowd could have been more into the show, but that was far from Claire’s fault. Grimes will continue her ascent as time goes on, so it’s good to see her as much as you can before she really blows up.
