I would call myself a pretty casual fan of Wilco. I am very familiar with there recent releases, and somewhat familiar with the earlier stuff at the front end of their career. I went in expecting to hear a good mix of both, since a band like Wilco is known for long sets with often multiple encores.
Last night was definitely not a show for the casual fan. Wilco dove into the deep end of their earlier material, pulling out rarities and b-sides. Either way, all the songs sounded top notch. “Art Of Almost” was as intense as I hoped, and “I’m The Man Who Loves You” was great to hear. The best moment of the night for me was “Impossible Germany”, in which Nels Cline just went all out on his guitar. Man, that guy can play.
I would have loved to hear more Yankee Hotel Foxtrot stuff (no Jesus Etc. & Heavy Metal Drummer), but that’s just me. I went with a pretty big Wilco fan and even he was caught off-guard by their setlist. My other friend was ecstatic getting to hear a bunch of early material that he was wonderfully shocked to hear. So it all depends on the type of fan I suppose.
So for me, the set wasn’t what I would have preferred, but that’s my own fault. For the diehard Wilco fans that were there, they must have been in heaven. And that’s what it’s all about. The band sounded as great as they were reputed for, and that’s all that I can ask.
