Today Coldplay have released a new single titled “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall”. Their first new material in quite some time. After the surprise that was Viva La Vida, fans have been (im)patiently awaiting to hear new material. I’m one of those fans. However, I’m left very disappointed upon initial listens.
It’s not that this song is terrible, it’s just nothing that we haven’t heard from the guys yet. My gripe with the new single is that it isn’t the direction that they needed to take. The band took a step in the right direction on Viva La Vida, where they experimented enough where their sound worked in a whole new light.
With this single I hate to think that the band decided to play it safe, but that’s what these first few spins of “Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall” is telling me. I’m sure it will do well on the charts, it’s probably going to be a good song to see live at festivals this summer. But for a guy who really wanted to see Coldplay progress into the band that they could be, I’m somewhat disappointed. And remember, this is coming from a fan of the band who deeply adored Viva La Vida. This song just isn’t doing anything for me right now. I feel like I’ve heard it before.
Be your own judge. Take a listen below:
There’s no official word if this is on their new album (though I’m assuming it is). Hopefully the rest of the album fares better and this is just the most single ready song. I’m still excited to hear what else the band can do.
