Boy was it hot yesterday. I had a great time at the festival even though I was sweating my ass off through it. I woke up late and missed a few of the first acts but got there in time to catch the end of the Screaming Females set. I had seen them open for the Arctic’s last December and it looks like they were still tearing it up live. I met my friends for Surfer Blood’s set, and the boys sounded great. They played all my favorite cuts from Astrocoast. The sound was a lot better than the last time I saw them, so it really made a difference.
Up next was The Night Marchers, a band made up of middle aged men that brought the rock. They had mean riffs and played tight songs that were totally rock and roll. Pains Of Being Pure At Heart delighted us with perfect indie pop rock that I really did enjoy. I can’t wait for their next record. I caught the beginning of Ted Leo’s set which lived up to their reputation, but I was eager to catch the young talents of Cymbals Eat Guitars. They are not a band made for outside venues. I think their sound would fit a lot better inside. Their set improved as they went along, which is always a positive.
I have already seen Matt & Kim live , and do enjoy their music from time to time. However, I don’t understand the recent craze for them. They are a lot of fun, but aside from that, they don’t do much for me. I decided to check out Holy Fuck and I am more than pleased with my choice. The crowd went apeshit for Holy Fuck, and for good reason. Holy Fuck dominated Coney Island with an incredible set of electronic dance rock instrumental jams that had people more than moving. I wasn’t sure if Holy Fuck had a headlining worthy performance in them, but they sure proved me wrong. I was pleasantly surprised with their set, and it was the most memorable performance of the evening, by far.
