Last night I finally caught Metric, live in the flesh. Although it was on the largest stage of all large stages, Madison Square Garden, I was able to get up close and personal with them with a photo pass. As a kid I remember seeing bands like Muse and Foo Fighters in the GA pit at MSG and seeing photographers get to go up close and take photos. I always wondered what one had to do to get that job, so it was extremely surreal to get to be in that position all these years later.
Metric were opening up for Paramore, and got the second slot (HelloGoodbye went on before Metric). They played a short but very sweet 8-song set where they busted out all of their hits for our pleasure. They started with their amazing Scott Pilgrim vs. the World track “Black Sheep” as well as Synthetica’s lead single, “Youth Without Youth.” Personally I got into Metric after the release of 2009’s Fantasies. Hearing the mega tracks like “Help I’m Alive”, “Sick Muse” and “Stadium Love” with room to shout in the Garden made me remember why I treasured that album so much.
Frontwoman Emily Haines was an energetic force on stage leading the way with a charismatic performance that was a blast to watch, and photograph. I had a blast watching these guys play. They held their own at MSG and deserve to play in such big places where their sound is perfectly suited.
