[new]: Vundabar – “Burned Off”

By Will Oliver, January 15th 2020

Boston duo Vundabar have announced that their new album Either Light will come out on March 13 via their own label Gawk Records.

Today the duo released the record’s first single, the very 80s-esque “Burned Off.” It’s got a light and fun appeal that notes a slight change in their sound but one that suits them very well.

Find the video for “Burned Off” available to watch below. You can also find the album art, tracklisting and their upcoming tour dates.

Real Estate have been teasing the release of a new album for the better part of a year which makes today’s official news of their fifth album that much more exciting. It’s entitled The Main Thing and will be released on February 28th via Domino Records.

The band have also dropped first single “Paper Cup,” which features guest vocals from Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso. The track is a notable shift in direction for the band who take on a disco-groove and sees them lean a bit harder into their jammy tendencies. That clean polished Real Estate sound is still very much there but this is a nice evolution for their sound.

U.S. Girls have announced that they will return with their new album Heavy Light on March 6th via 4AD. This is the Meg Remy-led project’s first album since their critically acclaimed 2018 album In a Poem Unlimited.

The album sees Remy looking inward, “recounting personal narratives to create a deeply introspective about-face. The songs are an inquest into the melancholy flavor of hindsight, both personal and cultural.”

New Jersey’s Pinegrove has announced that their new album Marigold will be released on January 17th, 2020, via Rough Trade Records. This announcement comes paired with the release of new song “Phase,” the second song released from the album following the album’s first single “Moment,” both of which we heard the band play when we caught them last month at Brooklyn Steel.

Mac DeMarco will return with his fourth album Here Comes The Cowboy on May 10th. It will be the debut release on his very own record label, appropriately titled Mac’s Record Label.

With the announcement of the new album comes the release of it’s first single, “Nobody,” which strikes a few funny parallels with Mitski’s 2018 album Be the Cowboy and it’s single “Nobody.”

The track features the more mellow and laid back Mac that we witnessed on his previous release This Old Dog, with some of the same lo-fi charm that strikes a familiar feeling that some earlier releases gave at the very same time. The album is described as having “the best romantic tunes the well-known romantic has ever penned,” and this seems to be the case based on our listen to “Nobody.”

Sunflower

They’re not even allowed to drink (at least legally) but Sunflower Bean all already starting to call to mind the work ethic of prolific rockers like Ty Segall. The group have been touring endlessly since the start of 2014, playing more shows than anyone else in the great city of New York. This year they released their fantastic debut EP Show Me Your Seven Secrets, full of songs featuring hard-hitting psych wandering. They then followed that up with a 7″ featuring two rippers (“I Hear Voices” / “The Stalker”) that was released via Fat Possum over the summer.

And as if that wasn’t enough, the group have now announced that their debut album Human Ceremony will be released via Fat Possum on February 5. To mark the occasion of the announcement, the trio have released the ripping first single “Wall Watcher.” It’s a song that I’ve heard many times in live form, and I can proudly say that they’ve captured its essence and then some on this recording. It showcases the bands ability to rip through glorious fuzz rips, while also finding a slick psych-groove that they hammer home almost too easily.

Stream “Wall Watcher” below, pre-order the album here, and find the tracklisting below. I’ve also included their upcoming tour dates, which includes their own headlining performance at Bowery Ballroom on February 25, as well as a return trip to SXSW.
