I never thought I would have the chance to see any of The Beastie Boys, with not getting to see them at All Points West many years ago still one of my biggest show what ifs even today. But Mike D recently played some shows with his sons Skyler and Davis Diamond, soon announcing a handful of shows in Los Angeles and New York.

The New York shows took place last Friday and Saturday at Xandu Roller Arts, a unique hybrid show space and rollerrink that was quite a special place to catch a show, let alone Mike D’s return to the stage. We caught the Friday night performance, which featuring Mike backed by his 5D band, which featured Davis and Skyler joining him (and their band Very Nice Person opened up the show).

Kicking off the show was what else but Beastie Boys’ “Hello Brooklyn”, and from there the room completely lost its mind and was transported back in time. A good majority of the set featured his new solo material, including the released singles “Switch Up” and “What We Got”, as well as a handful of unreleased tracks as well. These songs featured a wide variety of sonic exploration and tempo/mood, all showing an adventurous side to an artist so many years into his career.

The crowd lost its collective mind even further when he delivered fellow Beastie’s cuts “Looking Down the Barrel of a Gun” and “So What’cha Want”, which closed out the evening in epic fashion.
