Heart and Mouth is the alias of UK songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Flynn Mulcahy, who is coming out with his own solo record after years writing, touring, and lending shape to other people’s sounds.
“Heart and Mouth” is a self-titled track that is a proper introduction as his debut single. There’s a gritty and groovy indie rock quality that features some hypnotic genre-bending beats and flourishes from his collaboration with producer Soren Bryce, who gives the track an almost sinister and alluring atmosphere that lays the groundwork for Mulcahy to do the rest of his magic.
Speaking on the track they add:
Heart in Mouth came out of the rubble. Soren and I were combing through scraps and half-ideas from the live sessions; drum takes, stray guitar lines, odd noises, bits of bass that never found a home. We started stitching them together for fun, just seeing what would happen. Before we knew it, we were invested.
The song built itself in real time. The lyrics came fast, instinctive, unfiltered, written in 20 mins. It sits apart from the rest of the record because it wasn’t planned; it arrived. A collage of abandoned parts that somehow became one of the most immediate tracks in the project.
It’s the sound of the album’s offcuts finding their voice. One of those rare moments where everything clicks before you’ve had time to think.
