The Mothers of Lovers are a wonderfully named band from New York City who last month shared their single “Wolf Cut.”
The track began as a instrumental written for promotion of a show a long time ago until they resurfaced it and wrote about a beautiful girl that came by a coffee shop with a wolf cut. The track has a jangly lo-fi indie rock sound that just feels like it was made in the summer of 2010, back when this was the sort of sound that could shift the entire ecosystem of the music blog scene. There’s something so raw and earnest about it that brings back a ton of nostalgia.
Speaking on the track, the band adds:
Recording “Wolf Cut” was a great experience that opened more doors for us as songwriters. We actually hated how cheesy the ending sounded, so we thought to cut it off abruptly right before the ending hit and replaced it with radio static. We wanted it to sound like someone just skipping over the ending just to move onto the next song. It’s an ode to short attention spans and doom scrolling mentality. Instead of giving things a full try we all just move onto the next thing to get another shot of that drug. The one that keeps on giving.
