Earlier this year London-based band Howling Bells returned with “Unbroken”, their first new music since 2024. They have since announced that it will be on their new album, Strange Life, which will be released on February 13 via Nude Records.

With the announcement the band released follow-up single “Heavy Lifting”, a song that “takes aim at the entitled and the opportunist.” It’s an enchanting bluesy inspired enchanting indie rock with soulful instrumentation that has a bit of a grunge-inspired feel to it. Channeling the likes of Wolf Alice and Warpaint, it blends an ethereal quality with the raw power of 90s legends like the Breeders.

Further detailing the track, the band’s Juanita Stein adds:

“‘Heavy Lifting’ is a hazy and grunge-fuelled declaration. Like anyone who’s worked at the thing they love tirelessly, you build up great resilience. The callouses on your hands, the muscles you’ve strengthened, the swagger in your stride. ‘Heavy Lifting’ is a song about the thousands of miles you walk to acquire this kind of confidence; this is not anything that can be stripped away from you”.
