King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard returned to Forest Hills for a pair of shows during the summer for the second straight year in what we hope becomes an annual tradition. This round saw the prolific Australian rockers deliver an orchestra show with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s led by Sarah Hicks, and then night two was a “rock show.”

The first set saw the band run through all of their new album Phantom Island with the orchestra allowing them to bring it to life to its fullest extent. The album sounded simultaneously even crunchier and even lusher with the strings, which was a nice refreshing way to see the band for all of those who have seen them countless times over the years. And based on the cool outfits, signs, and general good vibes, was pretty much everyone in attendance.

The second set featured songs from throughout their catalog, and although I didn’t expect them to rip through tracks like “Dragon”, “Crumbling Castle” or “Mars for the Rich”, they delivered them with extra flare and gusto with the orchestra that resulted in a perfect way to close out one hell of a performance.
