Esssex-based indie rockers Don’t Worry will return with their third album, Idealism, on July 18th via Specialist Subject Records.
Ahead of its release they’ve shared a handful of singles, most recently the very shimmering “Unbelievable”, a song written during the first lockdown in 2020. It has a blend of The Shins and Built To Spill with a blend of 90s indie influences with a hint of a slacker quality, blended with some sneaky smart hooks.
Detailing the track further, the band’s Samuel Watson adds:
Unbelievable was written during the first lockdown in 2020. I had been going through a sustained period of feeling uninspired and it was the first song I’d finished in months and subsequently it’s about trying to break through that struggle. Musically it’s inspired by early Beatles and 1960s sunshine pop, deliberately contrasted with the dystopia we were all living through at that time.” – Songwriter Samuel Watson
Then there’s the previously shared single “Middle Finger”, a song about accepting that life won’t always go your way all the time. There’s a melancholic spirit to it that also feels upbeat and rather hopeful, with some 80s indie rock and new wave qualities that have a real sweet emotional sentiment.
Below find some background on the track from the band’s Ronan Van Kehoe:
“Despite its name, Middle Finger isn’t about swearing or hand gestures. It’s a song about acknowledging that even when life goes the way you want it to some of the time, it’ll never go the way you want it to all of time, and that’s ok. I did have a cyst at the base of my middle finger (but it miraculously disappeared), I do have astigmatism in both eyes, and I probably don’t have the world’s most physically healthy heart. But despite those things, life is alright, you know? The earliest iPhone demos of this song were way back in 2022. It’s gone through the mill a few times since then. Alex took the song in the synth-heavy 80s inspired direction that you hear on the final version, and we’re really happy he did that. We think this song showcases another different sound that’s present on our 3rd album “Idealism”, and there are several other new flavours to come.”
