Chicago-based singer-songwriter Mia Joy will release her debut album, Spirit Tamer, on May 7th via Fire Talk Records. We previously shared lead single “See Us,” and today we hit back with the second single shared from the LP, “Freak.”
It’s a mesmerizing intimate folk song that sees her tackle a breakup in a most touching fashion. There’s a hazy ethereal atmosphere in the air, a perfect partner in crime for the stunning vocals and personal lyrics that forge a devestating song that cuts deep.

“I loved the imagery of that phrase, a freak on a leash as in feeling tied in a relationship you know is toxic but feeling bound to them, thus making you crazy or a “freak”. Once off the leash, the pain that was holding onto you, you can finally find your own way. I wanted to end it with a sense of reclaiming identity and independence and breaking free from the symbolic leash.”
