We thought we saw the last of punk trio Vivian Girls when they said farewell to us at Baby’s All Right five years ago at what was their final show as a band. But this year they surprised us all announcing not only their comeback but a brand new album Memory, which was released via Polyvinyl Records.

It’s a strong return for the trio of Cassie Ramone, Katy Goodman and Ali Koehler who find their footing and showcase a more polished and mature sound that fits them well at this new juncture of their career. Last Friday, October 17th saw them make their live return here in Brooklyn, with a performance at Warsaw.

The trio didn’t miss a beat, sounding as strong as we had remembered and giving both the new songs and the older songs a gritty live showing that had the front section of the crowd moving around at the same velocity as we had seen when they used to play those good old haunts like Death By Audio back in the day, bringing that same joyful exuberance that made us fans of theirs in the first place. They split the set between their first two records (Everything Goes Wrong and Vivian Girls) along with the new album and gave a 3-song encore performance featuring a cover of Jay Reatard’s “My Shadow,” as well as a strong 1-2 punch of “All The Time” and “No.”
