Foals returned with their fifth album Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost – Part 1 on March 8th, the first of two new records this year that are a part of a two-piece album that will see part two released later this fall. The band are currently on tour in support of Part 1, which brought them to New York over the weekend for three sold out shows at Brooklyn Steel.
Kicking things off were both Atlanta indie rockers Omni who just signed to Sub Pop Records and Preoccuptations, a band who we always love to catch live and was an added bonus to an already stacked lineup of music.
Foals have built a reputation as one of the best live acts on the scene at the moment and their performance during Night 3 on April 14th completely confirmed this notion. While it’s a shame to see founding member and bassist Walter Gervers leave the band, Everything Everything’s Jeremy Pritchard filled in perfectly. The band ran through a good chunk of new material but also kept a nice even balance between some older tracks, with old favorites like “Olympic Airways” and “Red Socks Pugie” sounding just as big and massive as some newer jams such as”Sunday,” “White Onions” and “Inhaler.”
As usual with Foals, the encore is where their show truly shines, with frontman Yannis Philippakis going into the crowd during the big breakdown during “What Went Down,” going for a crowdsurf and standing on the crowd for a bit before going surfing once more. The band concluded the show with longtime staple “Two Steps, Twice,” a song that truly takes shape of its own every night based on the venue and crowd and absolutely tore down the house and ended Foals three-night run in a completely epic fashion.
