In March, New Jersey indie rockers Real Estate returned with In Mind, their fourth album (via Domino Records) and the first without founding member Matt Mondanile, who had left to focus on Ducktails. The album was also their first with Julian Lynch, his replacement and a longtime friend of the band (he appeared on their last album, Atlas, as well). While Mondanile’s presence is certainly missed, Lynch has stepped in to offer his own signature touch to the bands already established sound.
On May 21, they stopped back to Brooklyn for their second sold out show at Brooklyn Steel. The performance featured an opening set from Frankie Cosmos (who recently signed to Sub Pop), who have been opening for Real Estate during this part of the tour.
Real Estate delivered tracks off the new album which sounded good live, but it was the older material that I was most interested in hearing how it would sound with Lynch on guitar. He gave the songs a louder boost, staying true to their DNA, but offering a little bit more of an edge.
This being the last show of this U.S. tour, the band delivered the goods nice and early, giving us songs like “It’s Real,” “Talking Backwards,” and “Green Aisles” as songs four, five, and six in the setlist. With Lynch the band indulged in some more jammy tendencies, such as a “Beach Comber” transitioning to the outro of the trippy “Two Arrows,” the highlight of the new record. They were joined by all of Frankie Cosmos during the encore performance of “Same Sun,” and rounding things off with a pretty major performance of “All The Same.”
It was a typically solid performance from Real Estate, who seem to really be at a good place right now. They said they would be back soon, and that can’t come quite soon enough.
