In a deluge of sub-par horror films, a scant glimmer of hope emerges. The first teaser for Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak was released today, and what a breath of fresh air it is. I try not to write off movies based on a pre-concieved notions, but it really seems like Hollywood has run out of ideas to frighten us. All of the jump scares and demonic possessions have gotten a bit stale, and although they have their place, I think viewers are looking for something new.

Crimson Peak is a gothic horror film that seems to focus on creating an eerie sense of dread, rather than bait you into those loud startling moments. Del Toro was originally attached to a reboot of Disney’s Haunted Mansion, but the project went cold. I can imagine some of his concepts for that will make an appearance. The “haunted house” is such a classic idea, and though a few recent horror flicks like The Woman in Black (2012)have made valiant attempts, nothing has quite hit the mark yet. With Del Toro directing and a cast including Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, and Charlie Hunnam, I’m optimistic.

Crimson Peak hits theaters on October 16th, 2015.
