Death Cab for Cutie - Black Sun

Death Cab for Cutie will return with new album Kintsugi on March 31 via Atlantic Records. It’s last recorded recorded with founding member Chris Walla, a major theme of the album’s recording process and final result.

Today Death Cab released the album’s first single, “Black Sun” and it marks both a new direction and familiar territory for the band. While there’s a feeling of sadness and melancholy that calls to mind the band’s earlier days, there’s also some heavy synth-work and some new guitar pedals added to their arsenal. By the time that the big guitar solo that awaits hits, you’ll know where you stand on this new sound, one that Ben Gibbard pleads fans to “listen with as little prejudice as they can and try to hear the music for what it is and not what they want it to be.”

It’s an intersting track that both reminds me of their older days, but also reminds me that this is a band heading into a much different direction. Although Ben hopes that you take it for what it is, I’m betting that you’re opinion on “Black Sun” favors heavily on whether or not you want Death Cab to push the boundaries, or revert to something more familiar.

Me, I’m just going to let it sink in a bit more.
