One of the highlights of my CMJ 2014 came from Ultimate Painting, a new British outfit from James Hoare (of Veronica Falls) and Jack Cooper (of Mazes). They just released their self-titled debut album last week (via Trouble in Mind), and stopped in to CMJ the week before that to say hello to U.S. audiences for the first time.

They did just that, and then some, winning me over during their tight set upstairs at Pianos, playing to maybe 30-40 people, but all who were more than appreciative of the treat that they were lucky enough to witness. The group locked in to a very 60’s minded tune of throwback guitar riffs as well as hazy 90’s melodies and vocals. Live, it was a good mix of rocking guitar licks and memorable vocals, that made my ears very, very, happy.

For sure, one of the best sets that I caught at CMJ.
