This weekend Vivian Girls played their final live shows ever over the course of two nights in Brooklyn. On Saturday night they played at Death By Audio, and last night they played their final swan song at Baby’s All Right.
Potty Mouth and Shellshag were the chosen openers. Potty Mouth kicked things off first. Hailing from Northampton, Massachusetts, they’re an all female quartet, with a energetic kick. They’re young and still have some time to grow, but I enjoyed most of their set. Their debut album Hell Bent is out now via Old Flame Records.
Shellshag followed them, but they honestly weren’t my thing at all. But even so, I respected what the duo put into there performance, which included there own version of Dinosaur Jr.’s cover of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven.”
Vivian Girls final performance felt more like a victory lap celebration rather than a sad goodbye. The band (Cassie Ramone, Katy Goodman, and Ali Koehler) were all in high spirits, excited to be playing with each other one last time. The whole venue was decorated with balloons, assuring us that this was meant to be a happy experience, not sad.
The girls were all business, sticking to their guns and delivering all their best cuts. The songs came first, but there was also plenty of time to take in the moment and look back at their history. They reminisced plenty, and took quite an insane amount of fireball shots on sage. Their family members were also in the crowd, there to take in the night as well. It was a collective experience that was shared with everyone in attendance.
The moment wasn’t lost on them, as guitarist Katy Goodman took plenty of photos of both her bandmates and of the crowd while on stage during the show. They finished their set, gave us an encore, and then wrapped it up just as if it was any other show. But then they were greeted in a group hug with their loved ones, some of which even came ready with flowers.
It was a memorable final show because it didn’t feel over the top, but it felt just right. A good proper send off to Vivian Girls who started it Brooklyn and went out on their own terms, right where they were meant to sign off.
