Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - Groot and Rocket

Guardians of the Galaxy is out of right field for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s about a bunch of space-faring misfits trying to save the galaxy from complete and utter destruction. And it looks flat-out awesome.

The trailer (above) was premiered exclusively by Jimmy Kimmel – with an introduction by special guest Chris Pratt. It’s a solid mix of the SDCC footage (the line-up, the tasing, the temple sequence), the teaser for the trailer, and some new bits of footage. Frankly, it’s a great first trailer to whet the appetites of Guardians fans, Marvel fans, and newcomers to the series and franchise. The line-up by Nova Corp officer Rhomman Dey (John C. Reilly) and his unnamed associate (Peter Serafinowicz) serves to introduce the team – You’ve got Peter Quill/Star Lord (Chris Pratt), who thinks he’s the shit – particularly because he calls himself “Star Lord” and nobody else does; Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is a master assassin – and (spoiler) the daughter of Thanos; Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) is out for revenge – (also, spoiler) against Thanos and Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), the latter of whom can be glimpsed for a split second; Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper), a genetically engineered bipedal raccoon marksman; and lastly, Groot (Vin Diesel), a sentient humanoid tree – and Rocket’s heavy artillery carrier. There are glimpses of The Collector (Benicio Del Toro), Ronan, and Nebula (Karen Gillan), a space pirate aligned with Ronan, but there is sadly little of Rocket, not enough Groot, and no Yondu (Michael Rooker).

All that aside, I’m more than pleased with this first trailer, and I’m eager to see more as the marketing and hype continues to build for Guardians toward its August 1 release date. The film is directed and written by James Gunn (Slither, Super), and is based on a story that Nicole Perlman and Gunn based off of the 2008 Guardians iteration written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.
