In a rather surprising turn of events, Zack Snyder has announced that he will be directing the sequel to 2013’s Man of Steel…and that it will feature Batman. Yes, you read that correctly. The Dark Knight is back.

At the end of the DC panel at Comic-Con 2013, Snyder addressed the audience and showed a teaser logo up on screen (featuring the Superman and Batman logos combined). Rumor has it that the film will be inspired directly by Frank Miller’s limited series comic The Dark Knight Returns (1986). Zack Snyder has gone on record claiming it is one of his favorite comics of all time.

This rumor is further compounded by the particular design of the Batman logo shown in the teaser, which highly resembles it’s comic counterpart:

The details are still sparse, though the cast from Man of Steel is contracted to return. Will Batman be once again played by Christian Bale? Will it regard the events of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy? Is this leading to the inevitable Justice League film set for 2017? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. As far as personal opinions go, I think they’re going to have to write this one very well to make it serious. We’re walking on eggshells here, people.

The crossover film is set for a 2015 release.
