Band To Watch: Greyjoy

By Will Oliver, December 10th 2013

Let me introduce you to Greyjoy, a duo (Karlin Courtney & Matt Crockett)  from Australia who you should be listening to. If you read this blog, there’s a good chance you’re going to become a big fan of these guys after hearing their sounds.

This summer they released their debut EP, which consists of 5-tracks that bath in all the best elements of synth-friendly dream pop. They live in the finest world of dream-pop wonder on the shimmering “Idle Thoughts” which features quite a delicious bassline. “Distane” has some elements and melodies that remind me of Passion Pit, minus the heavier synth overload. Then you have the lovely ballad “Emerald.”

Most recent singles “Complications” is a r&b jam that could be happily mistaken as a lost Hot Chip track. They’ve got the right ideas to transcend many different genres and elements, all while creating their own unmistakable sound. I’m quite impressed with how far along this young duo is, and urge you to check them out and keep them locked on your radar.

These guys have a bright future ahead of them, and are a band you need to watch. Mark my words, Greyjoy are the real deal.

Below, grab a free mp3 of “Complications” and below that, stream their EP. You’ll be sorry if you didn’t. Read the rest of this entry »

Conveyor – Pushups

By Will Oliver, October 29th 2013

Conveyor - Pushups

I meant to post this sooner, but between NYFF (for Monday Morning Matinee) and CMJ, I never got the chance.

Conveyor are releasing a limited 7″ on Gold Robot Records. It features two songs, “Mammal Food” and “Pushups.” It’s a 7″ gold vinyl, with only 250 copies made.

They’ve made the b-side “Pushups” available for free mp3 download, and it’s a big departure for the bands clean refined sound. “Pushups” is a rough and raw track with Conveyor’s signature harmonies buried deep within the fuzz. But don’t take it the wrong way, it’s an interesting turn they make, but it works to delicious results.

Download “Pushups” below.

The 7″ single is available for pre-order now.

By Will Oliver, October 24th 2013

Kurt Vile

The deluxe edition of Kurt Vile’s Walkin On A Pretty Daze is dubbed Deluxe Daze (Post Haze), and will feature a new EP called it’s a big world out there (and i am scared). As a blog with a long name, we are digging the length of these titles.

Last week during the chaos of CMJ he released a new song off the EP titled “Feel My Pain.” It’s a lovely little bit of wonder from Kurt that is light and airy, in a way on Kurt is able to do.

See photos from his performance at the 4Knots Festival this summer here. Grab a free download of “Feel My Pain” below.

Arctic Monkeys – Hold On, We’re Going Home (Drake Cover)

By Will Oliver, September 13th 2013 — with 2 comments

If there was ever a way to get me to listen to a Drake song constantly, getting Arctic Monkeys to cover it is a pretty good way to do it. They did just that when they covered Drake’s latest single, “Hold On, We’re Going Home.” They covered it live during there performance on BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge.

It’s pretty freaking good, and of course Turner throws in a “tha knows” in there for good measure. Honestly, this would have fit in perfectly on AM.

Find a video of the performance below. After that you can grab a mp3 download of the cover if you so desire.

[new]: Allah-Las – Every Girl

By Will Oliver, September 4th 2013 — with 1 comment

Allah-Las are not a live show to be missed. I caught them twice in one day at SXSW, and was blown away by how effortlessly cool and tight they were live.

They’re still touring, and will stop by NYC on September 26 to play an early and late show at the Mercury Lounge. They will be selling a limited, tour-only 7″ vinyl (you can also buy it online, right here) featuring two previously unreleased songs, probably taken from their debut album’s recording sessions.

One of them is called “Every Girl.” It’s another 60s-inspired rock jam that will get in your head instantly. It just grooves along, hard, and well. These guys are just float out cool. Grab a free download below.

[new]: Los Campesinos! – What Death Leaves Behind

Los Campesinos - What Death Leaves

Los Campesinos! will release new album No Blues on October 28 via Witchita Recordings/Turnstile.

Along with the album announcement came the release of a free mp3 download of one of the album tracks, “What Death Leaves Behind.” It’s an exiting return for the band who pace themselves brilliantly in the song, slowly building up until unleashing a fury of glorious guitar fuzz alongside their trademark epic sound.

Also, I couldn’t help notice a lyric that any Breaking Bad fan would take notice of: “We tread it carefully.”

Grab your mp3 of “What Death Leaves Behind” below.
