The Drums at House Of Vans (June 7, 2017)

By Will Oliver, June 24th 2017 — with 1 comment

The Drums have endured many changes over the years, but recently suffered it’s most significant loss with the departure of founding member Jacob Graham. With the release of fourth album “Abysmal Thoughts” (released via Anti- Records), The Drums now operates as the solo project of Jonny Pierce.

Pierce wrote and played every instrument on the album, resulting in one of the most personal recordings of his career. There is the sense that this is a very different album from him, but it has that signature summer-misery hybrid that he could make in his sleep at this point.

[new]: The Drums – Blood Under My Belt

By Will Oliver, March 1st 2017 — with 1 comment

The Drums are finally back. It’s been three year since their last album 2014’s Encyclopedia. Their new album is titled “Abysmal Thoughts” and will be released on June 16 via their new label ANTI-. You can preorder it now, right here.

Today, along with the album announcement, The Drums have released the album’s first single, “Blood Under My Belt.” If you’re a fan of The Drums, it won’t take much to win you over with this one, as it’s very much got that classic Drums sound. Crisp and crunchy guitars that ring a summer-ready alarm, all over the rather sad and nostalgic vocals of frontman Jonny Pierce.

On December 8, The Drums, a duo version of Polica (featuring Channy and Ryan from the band) and It Will (Ian Williams from Battles) will come together for a benefit show at Saint Vitus. All proceeds from the show will benefit the ACLU.

Not only will it feature performances in such an intimate space, but it also features a raffle with prizes from great labels such as Merge Records and Mom + Pop. Not to mention the show is for a great cause.

Tickets for the benefit are still on sale, but don’t wait too long as this show will sell out very soon.

The Drums at Baby’s All Right (October 28, 2015)

By Will Oliver, February 27th 2016

Last fall The Drums returned to New York for a three-show residency at the intimate Baby’s All Right. The band have no new album (2014’s Encyclopedia was their last) looming, so I was interested to see how the set list would be divided up, and if we’d get to hear any new songs.

The Drums lineup has been somewhat tumultuous over the years, with founding members Jonny Pierce and Jacob Graham remaining the only constants. However former guitarist/drummer Connor Hanwick returned to play guitar for these shows, a promising sign that helped beef up a live rotation that also features bassist Johnny Aries and drummer Danny Lee Allen.

They played two shows at Baby’s the day before (October 27) and finished off the mini-residency with on October 28, with an opening performance from The Yetis. The setlist wait faithfully devoted to favorites both old a new, provided plenty of highlights from each of their three albums. When a setlist features songs like “Best Friend,” “Me and the Moon” and “Money” only six songs into the night, you know it’s going to be a good one. Jonny was as dramatic as every with his Morrissey-like movements, delightfully playing with the intimate fans that huddled mere inches from the frontman as he did his thing.

The group are currently hard at work on their new album which I’m most excited to hear, especially if it means some more live shows.

Find some photos from both The Yetis and Drums posted below, along with The Drums setlist.

The Drums – “Kiss Me Again” (RAC Mix)

By Will Oliver, April 27th 2015

The Drums - Kiss Me Again (RAC Mix)

Summer is well on the way, and we can always use some upbeat and breezy songs to go along with those warm days spent outside with a cold beer by our side. Last year The Drums released their new record Encyclopedia, a record that I wish people spent more time with, as it’s a real grower and takes some time to show itself.

It seems like RAC agrees, as they’ve taken Encyclopedia track “Kiss Me Again” and spruced it up a little bit more to their own liking. He doesn’t change to much about the song, but it’s enough to give it a shiny new look that will be perfect for some summertime listening.

Find the RAC mix posted below, and head to the track’s soundcloud page for a free download.

The Drums are back. Next week they release their new album Encyclopedia, and tonight they play a sold out show at Bowery Ballroom (they also played a sold out Music Hall of Williamsburg on Tuesday). I’ll be covering the show tonight and am terribly excited to see these guys, as always.

I recently spoke to the band’s Jacob Graham online in an interview where we discussed the new album, the current state of the band, and much, much more.

[music video]: The Drums – Magic Mountain

By Will Oliver, August 4th 2014

The Drums - Magic Mountain - Music Vide

The Drums music video for current single “Magic Mountain” shows the band (now duo) having an enjoyable evening in the woods, showing some pyro-tendencies. There’s also an odd dedication to the late Elizabeth Taylor towards the end.

The video was directed by The Drums themselves, and shot by Gorjan Lauseger. “Magic Mountain” is off the band’s upcoming album Encyclopedia, due out on Minor Records on September 24.
