Washed Out at Warsaw (June 17, 2018)

By Will Oliver, July 9th 2018

Ernest Greene returned last year with Washed Out’s third album Mister Mellow (released via Stones Throw) and brought its tour to New York last August for a performance at Brooklyn Steel.

He recently returned to Brooklyn again during the second leg of the tour in support of the album for a performance at Warsaw on June 17. Greene was once again backed up by two bandmates as well as some very colorful projection videos giving fans a sensory overload of both audio and visuals during the performance.

Find a gallery of photos from his set posted below along with the setlist.

Washed Out at Brooklyn Steel (August 29, 2017)

By Will Oliver, October 19th 2017 — with 2 comments

This year Ernest Greene returned as Washed Out to release his third album Mister Mellow, this time released on Stone Throws Records, his first album not released on Sub Pop.

On August 29 he returned to New York for a sold out performance at Brooklyn Steel in support of the new record. He incorporated the visual elements of the album to his live show with colorful and vibrant images projected behind him and his band, which included two other players, a much smaller group than the one he had the last time we saw him perform live.

This version of Washed Out was tailor made for the more dance and even hip hop elements of the new recorded, and gave the older Washed Out songs that they included in their set a more lively new lease of life.

Washed Out at Firefly Music Festival 2014

By Will Oliver, July 7th 2014 — with 1 comment

Washed Out have been hard at work this year touring for Paracosm, stopping by at quite a few festivals this summer. I saw the band again at Firefly, even after just seeing them a few weeks prior at Governors Ball.

The set was another reminder of how far Ernest Greene has taken this project, which he’s transferred as a personal project to a full out band. They seem to find ways to improve on each performance, making me believe that the best is yet to come. Read the rest of this entry »

Washed Out at Governors Ball 2014

By Will Oliver, June 10th 2014 — with 1 comment

Summer festivals are actually the perfect setting for an artist like Washed Out. Originally billed as a “chillwave” genre artist, the good vibes of a warm summer festival are more than fitting for Ernest Greene and his band.

I last saw them perform during the cold winters months at MHOW (when Ernest had long hair), and it was a great performance from the band. However, there was just something about seeing them perform outside at Governors Ball (even if under a tent) that made the show that much better. Greene’s vocals were off at first, but his band picked him up until he was able to get back on track. The set choices were perfection from “Feel It All Around”, “Amor Fati”, “New Theory” and the uplifting “All I Know.” It was a wonderful mid-afternoon set that Washed Out was built for.

Below, check out some more photos, along with the new video for “Weightless.” Read the rest of this entry »

After all these years, I finally got my chance to catch Washed Out live. Every time Ernest Greene and his band came to New York I was either away at college or had another show conflict or plans. Things finally worked out last night where he played a free show at Music Hall of Williamsburg as a part of Converse Rubber Tracks. Brooklyn-based acts Conveyor and Ghost Beach opened. [music video]: Washed Out – All I Know

By Will Oliver, October 25th 2013 — with 1 comment

One of my favorite songs of this year is Washed Out’s brilliant “All I Know.” I’m glad to see it got an epic music video treatment, as it was produced by Urban Outfitters. Directed by Daniel Kragh-Jacobsen, it features a recently heartbroken guy named Victor whose girlfriend has just left him for an older man (not a good feeling, trust me). His friend is filming Victor while inquiring about the details.

The two then set off on an epic road trip that makes me miss those epic road trips I took to Bonnaroo, and making me reconsider going next year, or even taking a journey across the entire country.

It’s a great music video, one of my favorites of the year as well. “All I Know definitely deserves it. The two actors, Ridge Canipe and Masam Holden, are great in this. It’s a must watch. Find it below.

[new]: Washed Out – Don’t Give Up

By Will Oliver, June 26th 2013

Washed Out

Washed Out gave us a taste of new album Paracosm a few weeks ago with “It All Feels Right.” Ernest has given us another taste with “Don’t Give Up”, another new cut that he shared earlier today.

“Don’t Give Up” is a ultra chill track that is perfect for this sudden heat wave that we’ve been experiencing in New York. It is just enough to help get rid of that humid air and let some of that cool air in.

Paracosm comes out August 13 via Sub Pop.

[new]: Washed Out – It All Feels Right

Washed Out

Washed Out’s new album Paracosm comes out on Sub Pop on August 13. He’s shared first single “It All Feels Right”, and it’s a more organic sound for Ernest Green’s project.

The chill wave vibes have floated off a bit, leaving room for airy Beach Boys-inspired vibes. It’s a more layered and trippy affair than we’ve heard in the past. I’m digging this new direction and hope the rest of the LP is just as inspired.
