You know you were in store for a good day (and weekend) of music when Angel Olsen is performing a set early in the afternoon. Olsen played the set solo, sans the four-piece band that I’m accustomed to seeing her play with. This stripped down approach was certainly in line with the more personal, laid back vibe of the festival.

Each Angel Olsen performance is different and special from the last, and this was no difference. Seeing a packed tent of fans sitting down embracing the superb talent was a sight I won’t soon forget.

Man, Angel Olsen had some year. Most of us already knew that she was a talent, but with the release of Burn Your Fire for No Witness, she’s hit the big time. I saw her play Music Hall of Williamsburg back in May, and thankfully she quickly returned to New York again for a few shows, including two sold out nights at Bowery Ballroom. I caught the 2nd show on December 9, which was her final show of the year.

Angel Olsen – The Waiting

By Will Oliver, October 22nd 2012

“The Waiting” is a lovely track from Angel Olsen’s album Half Way Home. “The Waiting” is sparse ballad that sounds misplaced, as it would have likely been a better fit in the 50s/60s. Test it out and see if you agree with me.

Give the album a try. It came out last month via Bathetic Records.

She will be playing at Maxwell’s in Hoboken on November 10, and then at Glasslands in Brooklyn on November 12.

Angel Olsen – Creator, Destroyer

By Will Oliver, March 27th 2011

“Creator, Destroyer” is the definition of a heartbreaking voice putting human emotion center stage. Angel Olsen truly has the voice of an angel. Her voice carries a bleak sense of fragility that is impossible to ignore. If you have any bit of a soul inside of you, this song hurts – in a good way.

“Creator, Destroyer” will be on Angel’s Strange Cactii 12″ EP which Bathetic Records will release on April 11th. If you like what you hear, pre-order it.
