British indie outfit Sports Team have been building quite a bit of momentum back home with some infectious and bright-minded guitar rock that harkens back to indie rock that you probably would have heard in the 90s. The band, who have recently signed with Bright Antenna Records, made their NYC live debut on June 20 with a performance at Elsewhere’s Zone One space, with opening performances from both Godcaster and Dances.

Sports Team immediately struck a chord with the crowd, with frontman Alex Rice coming out and shaking the hands of those in the front row, including the hand of this very photographer/writer. It was clear the band was happy to be there and this passionate and upbeat enthusiasm certainly is a line that runs clearly through their sound. They ran through their 10-song set at breakneck speed, wasting no time at all showcasing both the singles and best cuts that they’ve released to date as well as a handful of new songs that we can only imagine being off their anticipated debut album.

One thing is clear, Rice is an exciting and flashy frontman to watch and the whole band seem like a good unit that is still finding themselves, yet at the same time, delivering some polished rock and roll that sounds exactly like you want it to, not worried about current trends or ideals, just delivering the fucking goods.

Call it what you want but Sports Team are a band to watch, with quite a bright future ahead of them.
