It seems to good to be true that we get to see the rise of talented singer-songwriters Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus seemingly at the same time. All three of these artists stars have seemed to rise seemingly at once, and as if that wasn’t good enough, they seemingly are aware of this perfect timing and have formed boygenius, an indie supergroup combining their powers.

The released their debut self-titled EP via Matador Records, featuring six songs that shine a light on their supreme talents and give us a glimpse at what the future could hope if they hunkered down and recorded a full album. They’re currently embarking on a tour throughout the United States in support of the EP, and this included two sold out shows at Brooklyn Steel.

We caught the first nights performance on November 6th, only their second ever show performing together in front of a paying audience. The show was almost their own mini-festival, with each of them getting close to an hour to perform their own material with their own usual backing bands with them, beginning with Lucy Dacus, then Phoebe Bridgers, and finally Julien Baker.

The evening concluded in the only way possible, with a grand finale of the trio performing the entirety of the boygenius EP, along with both Lucy Dacus’ and Phoebe Bridgers band forming out the full boygenius live rotation. Getting to see these three powerhouse vocalists belting their beautiful songs together was totally goosebump-inducing, a true testament to their talent and how lucky we are to witness their arrival not only as individual talents but that they decided to form this group together.

With only so many songs, their set ran at about 30 minutes, but every single moment counted and everyone in attendance should feel lucky that they got to witness such a showcase of music.
