I hear people complain that rock and roll is dead, but clearly they haven’t heard of Gary Clark Jr. before. The man can play guitar. With a mix of old school style blues and modern rock and even r&b, Clark Jr. is doing interesting things that just happen pegged as one of the best modern guitarists in the game at the moment.

He stopped by New York on October 30, for the second show of a sold out two-night run at Terminal 5 in support of his new album The Story of Sonny Boy Slim. The performance was an awe-inspiring clinic of rock and roll, and not just from Clark Jr. He invited a fan a chance to shred during one of his songs, and not only did the fan hold his own, but he brought the entire house down. It’s not something you see often at shows, especially with such a genuinely impressive result. Moments like that are probably going to be few and far between in the future, as I’m sure Clark Jr. will be headlining much bigger venues.

Black Pistol Fire, (who I last saw at Governors Ball 2015), opened the show, delivering a high energy performance as if they were headlining themselves. For only two guys, they are able to create a great deal of noise and leave you impressed. They’ll be back at Governors Ball again this year along with Clark Jr., and I hope to catch them both doing their thing once again.
