Spoon are the sort of band who I will never tire of, a group you can see over and over and still get a major kick out of each performance. They’re the good guys of rock and roll, the sort who you don’t hear from for a while, but when you do, everyone has positive things to say. No tabloid nonsense or drama, just good tunes and good vibes. You know what you’re getting from Spoon each time they come your way; a solid rock show that will leave you perfectly pleased.
They took hold of Boston Calling Sunday night with a fulfilling 16-song set that was mostly greatest hits as well as tracks off their ungodly good new album They Want My Soul. The crowd was fully into their set; one fan so much so that he let go of his surely beloved Boston Red Sox hat, tossing it onto the stage. It was left untouched behind Britt Daniel for a few songs, until he finally picked it up and wore it for one song before returning it back to the fan.
Newly added 5th member Alex Fischel adds a real excitement to the band live with his enthusiastic guitar riffage, but you really see how much he adds to the band on new songs such as the electronic-influenced “Inside Out,” where he helps manage the intricate keys. In fact, every member of the band’s presence is equally felt. Sure, it’s Britt Daniel that is center stage, but you get a full-band experience from Spoon that seems more like a collective group working together than a partnership of different egos, which can often be the case.
With Spoon playing Central Park tomorrow night, it’s hard for me to resist another go at the most consistent band working right now in America.
