During CMJ 2012 I was introduced to a band out of Delaware named Mean Lady who had me impressed. They were just hitting their stride back then and have since then released their debut LP Love Now on Fat Possum and picked up a spot at this year’s Firefly Music Festival (where they performed at the nicely named Big Break Stage).

As hometown kids, it made sense for the band to be playing the festival. It was truly a homecoming show for the band, with many friends in the crowd calling out their names. They’ve since added a fourth member to their lineup to handle bass duties, and it makes all the difference live.

There’s a natural loveliness to Mean Lady’s sound, with nothing getting lost live. With their friends cheering them on, the group delivered a delightful performance. Even with all the album’s worth of material (and a few new songs), it was “Bop Bop”, the first song I ever heard from them, that was the highlight of the evening.
