Spoon

Spoon have announced that their new album is called They Want My Soul, and will be released on August 5 via Loma Vista. This is their first album in four years (since 2010’s Transference) and their first on Loma Vista, as they were previously signed to Merge Records since 2001, releasing their last five LP’s with them.

For the first time ever, the band worked with outside producers, instead of having drummer Jim Eno produce it. Joe Chiccarelli started the production, and Dave Fridmann finished it up upstate in Fredonia, New York. The album is also the first to feature Alex Fischel, who recently joined the band (he’s also a part of Divine Fits, Britt Daniel’s other band).

The band spoke with NPR’s All Songs Considered, talking about the album recording process, their hiatus, and the general history/happenings of the band. There’s also some short preview clips of songs off the album. Head there now to listen to the full interview. Here’s one featured clip that describes They Want My Soul a bit:

It’s unmistakably a Spoon record, with bursts of precisely placed guitar noise and uncluttered, fantastically infectious grooves and melodies. But They Want My Soul also shows a looser band at perhaps the most confident point of its career, challenging itself and stretching its sound, particularly with synth textures courtesy of the band’s newest addition, Alex Fischel.

Spoon will make their live return to New York City this weekend at Governors Ball, making it perfect timing for the announcement of their new album They Want My Soul. Hopefully we will get to hear some new songs, one which may be titled “R.I.P.”
