“Unsustainable” is the first new single from Muse’s upcoming new album The 2nd Law. And yes, Muse lived up to their promise of venturing into a dubstep direction.

I’ll preface this post with some details of my history with this band. When I was younger and just started finding music on my own, Muse was a band I really enjoyed. Slowly my tastes evolved and I became a very casual listener of the band. As of late, the band’s quality has dropped tremendously, but this just takes the cake. “Unsustainable” is hardly listenable, if even creative. This band has strayed so far from their origins, it’s hard to even think of them as the band that wrote songs like “Unintended” and “Plug In Baby”.

All that aside, this song just takes everything that the band have been hinting at and just rolls it into one horrendous ball. It starts off with a dramatic intro with a newscaster talking over it, making it even more dramatic. Then it all “drops” even lower to a dub-step like breakdown that is just embarrassing. Fans may defend that Matt is just using guitar effects to create this sound, but even the band themselves admitted they are interested in a dubstep sound, citing sir Skrillex as a direct influence. Yikes.

I once really enjoyed Muse, but I have no interest in them at this point if this is what they want to do now. This is really disappointing. What the hell has happened to this band.

Listen to “Unsustainable” below if you dare.
