I honestly have never “gotten” Deerhoof until this morning. My friends at Toolshed once again were kind enough to give me this track and I always give anything I get a listen. The main problem with Deerhoof until now, was that I didn’t understand how the vocals matched with the music. For some reason, it just never clicked with me. However with the track ‘Offend Maggie’ something finally hit with me. It has a deep driving bass line, quick acoustic guitars, and female vocals that rival the best of Blonde Redhead. This song is only 2 minutes long, so that could possibly be a reason for its instability with me.

Toolshead could not have described the new song any better!

Say what you will about Deerhoof, but they know how to write a beautiful song. And “Offend Maggie” is all the more beautiful for the fact that it seems to come out of nowhere. For all its sparkling musicanship, it sounds casually tossed off like it was nothing at all. It’s a new sound for the band as much as it’s a new sound for pop music.

Maybe that explains why it is sinking in. Bravo Deerhoof, most bands don’t get 2nd chances from me. If they do, it normally doesn’t change much. Their new album is also called ‘Offend Maggie’ and will be in stores on October 7th. It is getting critical acclaim from everyone from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, Q, NME, and The New York Times

Deerhoof is donating a percentage of digital sales royalties from ‘Offend Maggie’ to an important grassroots organization. They have narrowed the choices down to five:

3. Peace Action West <http://www.peaceactionwest.org/>

4. Z Magazine <http://www.zmag.org/>
